  1. Through my experiences with Tae Kwon Do

My story begins in kindergarten, when I first started Tae Kwon Do with my sister and a couple of friends. After around one year, however, my sister and I were the only ones left. Eventually, my sister had enough of scraping her foot on boards during testing, and so we quit. Ever since then, it has always been on my bucket list to practice Tae Kwon Do again. Initially, it was because I was still a child and wanted to be cool, but ever since I quit basketball in 6th grade, I was looking for a new physical activity that I could put into my schedule. And that was when I remembered that I could do Tae Kwon Do to keep myself physically active. Finally, after one year, I returned to Tae Kwon Do under Master Daniel, this time without my sister as she picked up dance. And through this return, I have gained many new experiences and learned a lot.

Well, the first thing that I gained was how I physically feel now. As I took a year in between playing basketball and Tae Kwon Do, there was a lot of time for my body to become unfit. However, ever since I have been practicing Tae Kwon Do, it has raised my own sense of awareness on the condition of my body, and has helped me to continuously improve my fitness, especially when I did not take PE in school, play basketball, and even now, when I stay home most of the day. Tae Kwon Do has truly let me fulfill the first of my goals, which was to stay fit.

The second thing I gained was the fun that is involved. The feeling of learning new kicks and perfecting old ones is surprisingly fun. I think it’s similar to how just the individual actions involved in playing basketball, like throw a ball in a hoop, and dribble a ball, don’t sound too fun, but once you actually do them all together, it becomes fun. Just the act of moving your body is normal to everyone, however, the action of moving for the purpose of Tae Kwon Do is fun to me. Before Tae Kwon Do, I only found entertainment in playing basketball with my friends, cartoons, and other random games. However, Tae Kwon Do has broadened my view of what I can do to entertain myself and to keep myself positive. I feel like a large part of this is also thanks to Master Daniel and all of the wonderful instructors that have helped me in the past, present, and most likely future.

Obviously none of this would have happened if it weren’t for my previous experience with Tae Kwon Do, which caused me to come back to it. And I have to thank my parents for this, as not only did they let me return to Tae Kwon Do, but they were also the ones who gave me the first taste of Tae Kwon Do. Even though it was just initially just an event for my family friends and I to do something together, I really feel like if it weren’t this exposure to this world, I never would have even considered starting Tae Kwon Do.

Through my experiences with Tae Kwon Do, I was able to develop new understandings of both myself and of self defense. Additionally, I have gained things that I probably would not have pursued, like a fit body and physical entertainment. For these things, I am very grateful and proud to both stumble upon and stay in the world of Tae Kwon Do.
